1.
Our insurgent perseverance / and refusal is cut into our unwakened ear / unanswerable to you again and again / inside the curfews chalked out by the attentive eavesdroppers / to you only an illiterate aphonic / unrooted by disinterest / moved by nothing but the private folds of our domestic sacraments / a deafness disgorging a whole moment in slow seizure / together in observance / our silence a retort
2.
I think I'll come out of this quite disfigured / I think I'll come out of this having conceded too much ground / I'm livid / poor soul poor soul / And make no doubt I'll figure it out / upon reflection that I jettisoned / the pleasures I should have clung to most dearly / oh it's clear to me now that I don't know who I am / and when I look at all I have / I don't know who I am / This livid poor poor soul / on the smallest plot / on a dwindling plot / of diminished returns / my poor soul / on the smallest plot of land / I should come out of this quite impaired / I think I'll come out of all this quite disfigured / oh look at what i've done / I've conceded too much ground.

about

Deaf Republic was written after reading hard-of-hearing Ukrainian poet Ilya Kaminski's book Deaf Republic, a heart-wrenching long form poem about a townspeople under violent military occupation, whose resistance to their occupiers comes in the form of a sudden collective deafness and subsequent communication through a collaboratively fashioned private sign language. The song's lyrics were written over three years ago but have acquired new depths of poignancy and tragedy in light of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The Smallest Plot Of Land traces the same theatrically existential seams that David Bowie quarries in some of his under-appreciated albums such as Outside and Heathen: Horizons of possibilities rapidly diminishing; futures abandoned; selves returning to haunt...
